Well Woman Exam Q & A

Why do I need a well-woman exam?

The goal of a well-woman exam is to ensure your reproductive system is healthy and functioning optimally.

As part of your well-woman exam, Dr. Gabbay performs a pelvic exam, manually assessing the health of your reproductive organs, including your vagina, uterus, cervix, and fallopian tubes. She also examines your breasts for noticeable lumps or other abnormalities.

During your well-woman exam, Dr. Gabbay may also do a Pap test, which involves a simple, noninvasive swab of cells at the opening of your cervix. She sends the sample to a medical lab that evaluates the cells for changes that may indicate cervical cancer.

In addition to well-woman exams, Dr. Gabbay offers birth control counseling and testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

What are my options for birth control?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to birth control. Because every woman has different needs, Dr. Gabbay discusses your medical history and your family plans at your well-woman exam to determine which birth control method is best for you. She offers several birth control options including:

  • Condoms
  • Implants
  • Injections
  • Birth control pills
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)

While many of these methods contain hormones, Dr. Gabbay can also prescribe non-hormonal birth control options if you can’t tolerate hormones.

What can I expect during STD testing?

Sexually transmitted diseases are conditions that are spread from person to person through sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

Dr. Gabbay offers discreet, in-office STD testing and recommends that anyone who is sexually active consider routine testing to protect their reproductive and overall health. At your well-woman exam, she can determine which tests you need based on your risk factors for STDs, such as your lifestyle and number of sexual partners.

In-office testing is available for STDs like:

  • Herpes
  • Syphilis
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea

Many tests require a urine or blood sample, which Dr. Gabbay sends to a medical lab for further evaluation. She also offers testing for human papillomavirus (HPV). Dr. Gabbay usually completes this testing at the same time as your pelvic exam.

Based on your health history and lifestyle, Dr. Gabbay may recommend routine STD testing and can discuss a timeline during your initial testing appointment.

If any of your tests are positive for a disease, Dr. Gabbay creates a plan to treat your condition and reduce the likelihood you’ll spread it to others through sexual activity.
